House-House
Five year old Munia's elder brother couldn't sleep that night. It kept bothering him all day long and now those thoughts were creeping into his dreams too. The evening before, Munia and Banga (meaning a frog, in Bengali)were playing house-house; Munia's brother was not too happy about this. He did'nt quite like Banga. So he decided he'd tell him something that would make the little rascal stop playing with his little sister.
He decided to call it foul play. How can Munia and Banga play house-house without being married? That evening after he got back from school, he quickly gulped down the tall glass of milk and ran to Banga's house to find Munia already there. 'How can you play house- house?', he demanded. Your game is all wrong. You can't play like this. You will have to be husband and wife to play this game.' Banga and Munia were not really bothered. He decided to give it one last try. 'Listen, now that you continue to play house-house, you both are married. Now you are husband an wife. Munia can now wait till you come back from office and make 'cha' for you after that', Munia's brother declared nonchalantly and ran away.
But after he said that he was not in peace....now what if it comes true. In sometime Munia joins him and starts crying. She wails ' Ma will beat us up. Banga and i will have babies!!'. He knew there had to be a way out. Munia is inconsolable. Her brother asks her to calm down and says he'd figure a way out soon. The entire night he had nightmares of baba and ma beating him up and making him write sorry in the hundred page note book. He was willing to do that but what about the babies??? He falls asleep with those thoughts and wakes up only to realise that he still does'nt have a way out. Munia walks into his room in her school uniform and starts sobbing again. Ma enters when she hears Munia cry. Nothing would make Munia stop. Finally she tell ma - 'now i will have babies. All because of him. He got banga and me married yesterday.'
Ma gives her son a stern look (he thought ma's lips had almost smiled but decided against it). 'Go tell thakur that you are sorry and you will never do it again. Thakur will forgive you',ma instructs grimly and hugs Munia. 'You won't have babies, not now', she tells Munia. Munia jumps out of her lap and immediately rushes to banga's house to give him the good news.
Munia is 25 years old today. And her brother almost 30. He has a baby girl and Munia is happily married with no kids yet. No, she's not married to Banga, but is in touch with him. Her brother still makes outrageous propositions and gets jealous of anyone who is closer to Munia that him.
